Aerial / Utility

Cylinders for aerial lifts, digger derricks, and utility trucks — where the load being lifted is a worker, not just material.

← All industries

Aerial and utility cylinders carry the highest stakes of any mobile hydraulic application, because the load is a person. A boom or leveling cylinder on a bucket truck holds a worker steady thirty or forty feet up for an entire job, and it cannot drift, cannot creep, and cannot fail quietly. That changes the design priorities from a normal boom cylinder: load-hold integrity and controlled, predictable motion come first, and holding valves are integrated so a hose failure cannot drop or lurch the platform.

Leveling cylinders are the subtle part of the system — they keep the basket flat as the boom articulates, and their smoothness and repeatability are what make a platform feel safe to stand in. Boom and lift cylinders are sized with conservative safety factors against buckling, since a boom cylinder at full reach is a long column under sustained load, and the whole assembly is built to be inspected and re-certified on the maintenance intervals this equipment lives by. Outriggers set the stability the whole lift depends on, so they get the same careful treatment.

Because these cylinders sit outdoors, extended, in all weather, rod protection and seal durability are chosen for exposure as well as for the load-hold job. We build aerial, leveling, and derrick cylinders to the print with load-holding valves and the safety factors personnel duty demands, and we reverse-engineer discontinued units where the truck's envelope is fixed. Every cylinder is pressure-tested before it ships, because on a lift that carries people the first proof load is never an acceptable place to find a problem.

Representative applications

  • Aerial-lift and bucket-truck boom cylinders
  • Platform and basket leveling cylinders
  • Outrigger and stabilizer cylinders
  • Digger-derrick and auger boom cylinders
  • Jib and articulating-boom actuation
